What Is a PMCN BEAM Grant?

A BEAM (Broadband for E-Business and Marketing) grant is a grant, not a loan and is therefore not repayable. It is a time-limited funding opportunity for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises/businesses. (SMEs). The grant program is administered by PMCN (Parry Sound Muskoka Community Network) on behalf of FedNor. This program is the 4th round of BEAM funding in our region.

What is the BEAM grant for?

The grant is for investments in e-business, which is the use of the Internet or any related technology to assist in your normal business operations. PMCN BEAM grants are available for SMEs in the electoral district of Parry Sound Muskoka to the south of Burk's Falls.

PMCN BEAM provides the following:

Financial support: grants up to 75% of the cost to design, develop and implement a new or existing website, content, mobile applications and operational business applications. The PMCN BEAM 4 contribution is limited to $4,000 per business.

Education: gained through defining your e-business goals in the application. By working with your chosen vendor to establish your web presence or through adding e-business tools to your current website, you will further your understanding of how e-business can increase your sales and improve business efficiency.

Who is eligible?

Contributions will only be provided to qualifying Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) within Northern Ontario.

SMEs deemed eligible are as follows:

  • • operating on a full-time basis, with a valid BIN number;
  • • seasonal businesses, such as tourism operations;

SMEs deemed not eligible are as follows:

  • • hobby businesses;
  • • SMEs that have no reasonable prospect of being sustainable.
  • • not-for-profit organizations
  • • towns, townships, villages, municipalities

Applicants may receive a contribution of up to 75% to a total of $4,000, whichever is the lesser amount.

Eligible applicants will include the following:

  • • having never participated in the BEAM program before
  • • three years has passed since the completion date of your original BEAM-funded project

What costs does BEAM support?

The design, development and implementation costs of creating or upgrading a website, content, mobile applications and operational business applications.

What Components of my e-business project are eligible?

The Applicant’s project may be classified as:

  • • Web development (design)
  • • Content development (web copy; digital media)
  • • Mobile applications (mobile websites; mobile apps)
  • • Applications that support business operations
  • • Business management and process control applications
  • • Training applications

How, and when can I apply?

Applicants may submit their application any time after April 1, 2017. (See box for Regional Deadlines.) Submitted applications will be grouped by region. After each closing date, applications will be pulled together and reviewed by a committee of business professionals from each region to prioritize the business reasons given by applicants.

Due to limited funding, not all applicants will be successful. All applicants will be notified once the committee has made its selection. Successful recipients will be required to complete an Orientation Session and submit two quotes for the work that was outlined in the application prior to an Approval Letter and Contribution Agreement being issued. Successful Applicants are required to sign an Approval Letter and Contribution Agreement with PMCN prior to any payments being made and/ or any work beginning on the project.

If applicants are unsuccessful during the first intake, PMCN welcomes them to submit applications for the next regional intake.

Who can I hire to work on the e-business project with me? Northern Ontario vendors (as defined at the federal level) are preferred. Applicants who use Northern Ontario vendors will be eligible to receive up to 75% of eligible project costs. This contribution is limited to $4,000.

Applicants who choose to use developers outside of Northern Ontario will be eligible to receive up to 65% funding of eligible projects costs. This contribution limit remains the same, at $4.000.

Are there any costs not supported?

Ongoing costs such as web hosting, domain name and monthly maintenance are not supported. Any annual or monthly fees are not eligible under BEAM.


Eligible Recipients must receive an Approval Letter and Contribution Agreement prior to completing any work. Any payments made and work completed before an Approval Letter and Contribution Agreement have been issued will not be covered.
